KARTIKEY

On my 14th birthday, I received the most memorable gift of my childhood. At the time, I was living in Dubai with my family. My friends from high school came over to celebrate with me; there were about 15 of us, and my parents rented us a limo to take us around town. It was particularly memorable for me because it occurred around the time that my family and I were preparing to leave Dubai, and it was a unique opportunity to celebrate with my group of friends one last time.

I've never really thought about why I get so excited about Christmas, but now that I think about it, it must be because of my childhood memories of it. My dad always made it a point to buy gifts for everyone in the family. I was always given a toy car, and occasionally dolls, but my father must have noticed that I didn't care for dolls or combing their hair. So I would get whatever toys my brothers got, and mine would always last longer than theirs. For me, every Christmas in my childhood was a special occasion.

OLABODE

I remember wanting a handheld game console. PSP was the rage at the time, and my cousins had theirs. Whenever I got together with them, they would always want to play soccer, but I wasn’t much of a soccer fan. So I wanted one of my own where I could play adventure games. I told my mom that I wanted a PSP, and she said she’d get it for me on the condition that I came first or second in my class. This was due to the fact that I was always in third place. Alas, the results came out and I didn’t get the first or second position, nor did I get the PSP. Then a year later, when the PS Vita version came out, my mom got that for me. I couldn't contain my joy.

NIMI

As a child, I heard about encyclopaedias and imagined that if I read one, I would know everything there was to know about the world. As a result, I asked my mother to get me one, but she always declined. Then, one Valentine’s Day, my dad came home with a teddy bear and a condensed encyclopaedia. I was ecstatic.

EMMANUEL

On one of my birthdays, I received a Starcomms phone and some strange biscuits. Strange, because up until that point, all I knew of biscuits were Speedy and other popular Nigerian biscuits. But this was some fancy cookie I had never seen before, and it got me really excited. The Starcomms phone also served me really well because I remember playing a lot of games on it.

LUCKY

When I was in primary school, I used to take either the 6th or 7th position in my class. Then a particular term came when I was in primary 4, and I took 3rd position. My parents were so proud and surprised me with a Nintendo game. It got me really excited and inspired me to do even better in the coming terms.
